Experience the cafe culture in the buzzing retail precinct, the parks and gardens, our history and a few of the locals' hidden secrets.  Local guide Kim, will enlighten visitors, locals and visiting friends and relatives with stories of the town, foodie secrets, great picnic spots and the stories of the characters that helped shape the town.

One of the entertaining stories that guest enjoy on the tour revolves around the Sydney Hotel which has been a provider of liquor since 1838 when Thomas Rattray settled in the area and operated a punt across the river.  It was named The Sydney Hotel in 1864 and was called such as Ovens St was once named Sydney Rd.    At the time it was the main access through Wangaratta between Melbourne and Sydney, but for some reason the roads changed over time so that the main road become Murphy St.  It is rumoured that the reason may be that the surveyor at the time had an argument with the licensee who had him removed from the pub on one occasion.   As a result the surveyor changed town planning to divert traffic away from this pub.  Although only a rumour, it certainly provides an entertaining story for those on the tour.

Bookings not required.   For more information, contact the Visitor Information Centre: tourism@wangaratta.vic.gov.au
